Sharing Your Faith

Wow! We have once again finished an entire semester, and thus, we have come to our final passion blog post. It has been a lot of fun posting about faith and the bible this semester, and to end it, I want to offer one last take away: sharing your faith.

Many people have decided that Christianity is true, and found a solid faith in Jesus Christ as savior. However, when it comes to the aftermath of that, many people seem to turn away and cover their ears. This aspect that I am talking about is sharing your faith. The bible makes it pretty clear that the gospel is the core truth of all humanity, and once adopted into the kingdom of God, one should seek to spread this message to anyone and everyone. Take a look at the very last thing Jesus commands us to do at the end of the gospel of Matthew:

“’Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age’” (Matthew 28:19,20).

Go! It is a command, and a powerful one. Jesus wants us to see that we have received and accepted the most important revelation of all time and to extend that to others.

So lets look at some reasons for why we should do this.

First, the power of the gospel should fill you with so much joy and thanks that you want to tell everyone you know. Its like exceptionally good news. When Penn State beats Michigan, everyone calls all the people they know whether family, friend, or foe in order to let them know and to celebrate. It consumes our thoughts, conversations, and attitudes for days. How much greater is the message of eternal salvation? Look at what Jesus says to a man in the gospel of Luke after he heals him miraculously of a demon:

“’Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you…’”

So how does he respond?

“He went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him” (Luke 8:39).

When we are overwhelmed with truth and the joy of being undeservingly saved by our Creator, we have no other logical response than to eagerly tell everyone we know.

Secondly, if we love other people, we should share our faith with them. If the bible is correct, then we are all going to spend eternity somehow: either in eternal life or eternal death. You would have to sincerely despise someone and loathe him/her with all your heart in order to wish him/her eternal death. Thus, upon realizing the core truth of the world, you should desire to share that with someone who is confused or lost. It is merely the most loving thing you can do.

However, sharing one’s faith has become a sort of taboo subject in our society. We choose to ignore it because we don’t want to “force” our beliefs on other people. In reality, there is nothing forceful about having a spiritual conversation with someone; in fact, I think most people actually enjoy doing so because they have wrestled with these things internally. Moreover, I think we have become consumed by fear. We believe people will judge us for believing something or being firm in that belief.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).

Don’t be ashamed, and don’t let momentary embarrassment, awkwardness, or fear hold you back from sharing truth that holds the determination of eternity. We are humans: we have beliefs and we have the ability to have conversations about them. So Go!
